Our History & Culture
We are so much more.
The idea that became Habitat for Humanity first grew from the fertile soil of Koinonia Farm, a community farm outside of Americus, Georgia, founded by farmer and biblical scholar, Clarence Jordan.
On the farm, Jordan and Habitat’s eventual founders, Millard and Linda Fuller, developed the concept of “partnership housing”. The concept centered around those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build quality, affordable houses.
Habitat for Humanity of Omaha
Habitat for Humanity of Omaha was founded in 1984 to address the problem of substandard housing in Omaha. It took two years to build the first Habitat Omaha house. By 1989, annual production had grown to three houses and we hired our first staff member, a part-time executive director.
Ten years later, in 1999, we celebrated the completion of our 100th home. In 2000, Habitat Omaha branched out into the resale business by opening our first Habitat for Humanity ReStore, providing community members an affordable way to fix up their homes. As Habitat Omaha continued to respond to the housing needs in our community, we extended our efforts to include affordable home repairs, a demolition program, and neighborhood revitalization efforts.
A Culture of “What’s Next?”
With a nimble, entrepreneurial spirit, Habitat Omaha staff and volunteers are excited about the impact our organization continues to make in the community. We care about one another and believe strongly in our shared mission. Together, we are building toward an Omaha where everyone has a quality, affordable place to live.
Diversity at Habitat Omaha
