Since 1977, Mona McGregor has been an empowering force for Habitat Omaha’s mission. After studying fashion design in Los Angeles, Mona moved to Nebraska in 1985 and began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. She was later hired to do siding on homes.
Moving in a new direction, Mona decided to start her own construction company and later started the Construction Academy at Omaha Public Schools. However, her step back from Habitat Omaha was short-lived when she was approached to run the Habitat Omaha Women Build.
Mona worked the Women Build for a few years before Habitat Omaha staff approached her again. This time, they encouraged her to apply for the senior rehabilitation site supervisor role. M
ona was hired and started working full-time with Habitat Omaha while coordinating the Women Build event.
Mona has helped on Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Projects, working alongside the former president. At Habitat Omaha, she has since moved into the site supervisor position, working with the siding crew.
After years of dedicated work and a heart for Habitat’s mission, Mona has now stepped into retirement.
Mona’s favorite part of working for Habitat was the volunteers. “Seeing people give up their time to build a home was inspiring.”
She leaves behind shoes that will be difficult to fill. Her passion for people, homeowners, and volunteers shone brightly through her smile and servant attitude. She was patient and precise and always made sure to measure twice.
Mona says she will miss “(her) girls” the most but hopes to volunteer in future Women Build events. To honor and recognize her work, a home in Bluestem Prairie has been named “Mona,” after the woman who empowered us all to work hard, love deeply, and always have a little fun while doing it.
