A construction site was the last place Sophie thought she would meet her future husband. She started as a construction intern at Habitat for Humanity of Omaha in the spring of 2024. Her love of woodworking and impacting the community drove her to work at Habitat Omaha, learning skills in interior and exterior finishing all while building affordable, safe housing.
After working two months alongside the interior finishing crew, Sophie switched to exterior finishing. She looked forward to being outside and working with volunteers. On her first day, one crew member caught her eye. Grant, a recent Metropolitan Community College graduate, started as a construction intern in 2021 and eventually became a construction site supervisor, working on both the framing and exterior finish teams.
“From the day I met him, I knew I liked him. I texted my best friend that morning ‘I think I found my husband!’ not knowing it might actually happen,” Sophie explained.
Grant was assigned to teach Sophie the ins and outs of exterior finish during her first few weeks. They spent every day at work getting to know each other while Grant encouraged Sophie to get over her fear of heights, and Sophie made fun of Grant for not bringing lunch.
Their connection grew, and so did Sophie’s feelings towards Grant. When she heard they would have a day off for a holiday, she knew it was a chance to finally see Grant outside of work. She just needed the boldness to ask.
The day before, Sophie planned what she might say to Grant but couldn’t seem to find the right moment to ask. After saying goodbye for the day, Sophie turned back and walked up to Grant, boldly asking him if he would like to go mini golfing with her the next day. Loser was to buy the other lunch when they returned to work.
“I didn’t expect her to turn around. She popped her head around the corner of the house and caught me off guard,” Grant said.
Her boldness paid off. Grant said yes and the next day the two went mini golfing, followed by ice cream and lots of conversation. The round of mini golf ended in a tie. Regardless, when they returned to work, Grant took Sophie to lunch.
Grant and Sophie worked together for the remainder of the summer. They ate lunch together, played pranks on each other, and went on more dates.
When the summer concluded, and Sophie’s internship was complete, she knew her time at Habitat Omaha wasn’t finished — it was where her love story began.
A year and a half later, the two continued to work for Habitat Omaha, Grant in construction and Sophie in communications. While on different teams, they both work toward the same mission: to build homes, communities and hope.
In November 2025, Grant asked Sophie to marry him, and Sophie happily said, “Yes!” With their wedding day approaching, Grant and Sophie have been reflecting on the story that brought them here. “I am constantly in shock that this is real. The boy I had a crush on at work is going to be my husband.” Sophie said.
The couple looks forward to celebrating their wedding in May 2026 and is incorporating parts of their story that led them here.
“We’ve been working on building our own cross for the ceremony.” Grant says, “It’s special because we get to use the skills that brought us together in the first place.”
For over 40 years, love has been the blueprint for Habitat Omaha and what we do. Join our mission and fall in love with the people we work alongside, the community we serve, and the impact we create together.
