Habitat Spotlight: Meet Al

After retiring from the for profit world, Al (above, far left) started volunteering at the Habitat Omaha office in the fall of 2012, and ultimately joined the organization as Chief Financial Officer in the spring of 2013.

Al is originally from Columbus, NE. He came to Omaha after graduating from college in search of career opportunities.

As the CFO, Al handles most financial related matters such as “internal and external reporting of our operations, insurance, investments and planning for the future—and maintaining relationships with a number of our financial advisors, sponsors and other parties.”

His essential office item is his computer. When asked for a fun fact about himself, Al responded, “I’m an accountant—there are no fun facts about us as a species.”

He listens to old time rock & roll from the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.

After joining Habitat Omaha, Al was most surprised by “the complexity of the organization.”

“We are a charity, a construction company, a retail organization through the ReStores—and a bank—all intertwined together,” he explains.

“It’s a fascinating business model—and much more complex and interesting and challenging than I thought it would be.”

For anyone thinking of joining the Habitat Omaha team, Al says, “It’s a great place—with great people—trying to do the right thing every day. We’re far from perfect—but it’s a privilege to be a small part of a life-changing mission.”
