OPS Special Needs School Bus Driver Achieves Homeownership in Bluestem Villa

As a newly engaged man and an Omaha Public Schools special needs bus driver, Malcom dreamed of buying a home for himself and his soon-to-be wife to start their lives together. The cost of living in an apartment felt too high and Malcom knew he needed to look for different options. His aunt recommended he apply for Habitat for Humanity of Omaha’s Home Journey Program.

After he was accepted into the program, Malcom learned how to build his credit and finally be ready to take the step to purchase a home.

At last, the day came when the standby driver got the call that his dream was coming true. He would be the homeowner of one of the villas in the Bluestem Prairie development near 51st Street and Sorensen Parkway in Omaha.

“I was jumping up and down with joy!” Malcom said, after just finishing his bus route. So thrilled, he “could barely get the words out of my mouth” as he told the bus aid and his family the great news.

Malcom received more than just a home through his partnership with Habitat Omaha. He gained homeowner skills by learning about property taxes and how they work, how to maintain and care for his new home, and what homeowner insurance entails and how to navigate it.

Habitat Omaha made Malcom’s dream of homeownership come true, allowing him and his fiancé to start their marriage as homeowners.
