Omaha Mother Becomes Homeowner and U.S. Citizen in One Day 

Blanca was preparing to leave her job at an Omaha packing company in search of better pay and a path to homeownership when she received a text message from JoAnn, her housing counselor with Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. A home that Blanca could afford was available. 

“I was so excited,” she said. “It was a miracle.” 

For six years, Blanca, her daughter, Natalie and Natalie’s puppy, Princess, had been sharing a cramped two-bedroom apartment in the basement of a house.  

A few days after receiving the text, Blanca and Natalie toured the house in North Omaha. 

“There was so much space,” Natalie said. “We were already planning what it would look like in each room. And it had a big yard for my dog — that was the first thing I noticed.” 

Blanca imagined setting up a craft area where she could design ribbon flowers and display her beloved Precious Moments figurine collection. After years of making do, the idea of having a place dedicated to her hobbies felt almost unreal. 

“I need a space to work,” she said. 

Dec. 12 became one of the most meaningful days of Blanca’s life. That morning, she closed on her new home in the Kountze Park neighborhood. That afternoon, she raised her right hand and took the Oath of Allegiance, officially becoming a U.S. citizen. Both milestones marked two of three goals she had set for herself. 

“My house, my citizenship, and now next year I’m going to start my GED to get a new career or something different,” she said. 

Seeing her mother achieve so much has been emotional for Natalie. 

“I know how much she struggled in Mexico, and to see her accomplish everything right now makes me proud of her,” she said. 

Natalie is also working toward her own future, too. She is attending Metropolitan Community College and plans to transfer to a larger university to pursue a nursing degree. 

With more space than she has ever had, Blanca now looks forward to hosting her three other children and eight grandchildren. For her, the home is more than walls and rooms — it is proof that her perseverance has paid off. 

“This means a whole new foundation for my life, and I’m planting roots,” she said. “It’s a new beginning.”
