For six weeks this spring, Habitat for Humanity of Omaha is hosting the Maple V AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team. These nine members come from all over the country and will be serving with various nonprofit organizations across the central United States for 10 months. Habitat Omaha is their first assignment.
Team Leader Tarah Garrett chose to return to AmeriCorps after serving seven years previously.
“NCCC is an amazing program that grows young people into careers and helps strengthen communities in the process,” she explains.
For Jamie O’Bryant of Fort Worth, Texas, joining NCCC was an opportunity to serve her country without joining the military. Many of the team’s members chose to serve as a way to expand their horizons, meet new people, learn new skills, and help new communities. Jared Moehring of Omaha joined in order to travel to new states; ironically, his first assignment was right back at home!
During their stay with Habitat Omaha, the Maple V team will help frame basements at the 2017 Builders Blitz site. The team will also receive safety trainings and are always on call for any disaster relief.
