Behind the Build: Bringing old homes back to life

By Mark Butler, Construction Supervisor

After we’re done with a complete gut rehab, I always try to leave something behind.

A small thing from the original house that I’ve cleaned up, rebuilt, or brought back to life. It’s never big or flashy. I don’t point it out. But when the family walks in for the first time, there’s usually a pause.

Oh, look at that. That’s cool.

That’s a part of the work of Habitat for Humanity of Omaha that many people don’t see. We don’t just build new homes. We also rehab older homes across the city, ones that might otherwise be torn down or left behind.

These homes carry the story of a neighborhood, in ways that only old architecture can.

I started volunteering with Habitat Omaha in the early 80s. Back then, I showed up every Saturday and worked on one house all year long. Over time, I became the person people turned to when a house had “issues,” the kind you don’t see until the walls come down.

Termite and fire damage. Foundations built straight on dirt. The kind of houses most people would walk away from.

I never did.

Today, I’m the person Habitat Omaha calls when a house is too important to give up on.

Here’s what my work looks like now:

That’s why I always try to leave a small, hidden gift in every house I work on. It’s my way of saying: this home matters.

Thank you for believing in this work!
