As a child, Fontroy witnessed his mother struggle to find a stable home. That all changed in 1996 when she purchased a house through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. Her home was a haven for her and her children.

“It was a haven for everyone in her family — her grandkids, her nephews, her nieces, and everyone who shared Anita’s home,” Fontroy said.

Fontroy’s mother, Anita, passed away in 2023. She didn’t have a will or a Transfer on Death Deed, which would have transferred the home to a beneficiary of her choice after she passed away. Habitat Omaha purchased the house, and the equity was divided up among Fontroy and his siblings.

But, Fontroy was determined to buy his mother’s home and keep it in the family. That’s when he reached out to Habitat Omaha. He wanted to carry on Anita’s legacy. Through our Home Journey program, he completed financial education classes to prepare to buy his mom’s home, created a will and filled out a Transfer of Death Deed, ensuring the home would stay in his family.

“I would love to leave my house for my kids. I would love them to cherish this home like I did because there are a lot of memories here. This isn’t only a house, it’s a home.”
