Sometimes the biggest inspiration comes in a very small package.

Two years ago, 6-year-old Mariade made her very first gift to Habitat for Humanity of Omaha. This year, during our Giving Day campaign, she continued her tradition by donating $8 from her allowance as an 8-year-old. Along with her gift, she included a heartfelt note sharing her dream of becoming a builder when she grows up. When our team read her letter, we knew we had to help bring that dream a little closer to reality.

During Women Build, Mariade and her father joined us on the construction site, where she had the opportunity to meet the women helping build homes, communities, and futures across Omaha. She spent time talking with Women Build volunteers and Habitat Omaha’s women construction professionals, asking her own “girl-on-the-jobsite” questions and learning firsthand what it’s like to work in the skilled trades.

Watching Mariade’s curiosity and excitement reminded all of us why representation matters. When young people can see themselves in the people building our community, they begin to imagine what’s possible for their own future.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this special visit happen and especially to Mariade, whose generosity and enthusiasm continue to inspire us.

The Women Build program continues to shape neighborhoods while empowering women to make a lasting impact. Mariade may be one of the youngest supporters we’ve ever welcomed to a build site, but she already understands something important: building homes is about building opportunity.
