6 Home Maintenance Tips to Get Ready for Spring

Spring makes everything feel fresh! While the days get longer and the weather warms up, your home could use some TLC to catch up after a long winter. This is the perfect time to tackle easy projects that can have a big impact: lowering your utility bills, clearing out those spring allergens, and keeping bigger repairs at bay.

Here are a few quick tips from our construction team to get you started:

1. Seal It Up

Changing temps often leave tiny cracks in your windows, siding, and trim, which can let air, water and pests in. Inspect all area to see if you notice any new cracks or holes and seal them up with caulking to preserve energy and prevent damage from the elements.

2. Check The Grade

Make sure the ground around your home still slopes away from your foundation. If you notice soil has settled and water is pooling, add soil to direct moisture away from the house.

3. Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Gutters require cleaning twice a year: spring and fall. Make sure to check for rusted areas, dents, holes, broken gutter hangers and disconnected joints and repair them. Make sure nothing is blocking your downspouts, and that water flows at least 10 feet away from your house.

4. Watch For Weeds and Volunteer Trees

Pull weeds early before they break through concrete or take over your yard. Remove any small “volunteer” trees growing near your home—their roots can damage foundations if left unchecked.

5. Prep Your AC

Turn off your AC unit at the breaker and spray it down with a garden hose to remove dust and debris. Clear out grass and plants nearby and don’t forget to change your air filter!

6. Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Set your ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise in summer to push cool air down. While you’re at it, give the blades a quick dust.
