It’s Bigger Than Building: How Volunteering Has Impacted This First-Time Volunteer

Through volunteering at Habitat, Shea Griffin not only learned about nail guns and circular saws, but she learned why volunteering is so beneficial to her inside and outside the workplace.

As a first-time volunteer working alongside her coworkers from CQuence Health, Shea’s expectations of volunteering were astonishingly mistaken. “When I learned what this was, I did not think they were going to trust us” she explains. But upon arrival, Shea was thrilled to learn she would “actually [be] doing something big to a house”. Shea worked with the framing crew helping to set trusses, an important step before the roof can be installed.

Although Shea had never volunteered with a nonprofit before, she felt her day at Habitat was different than other volunteer opportunities she heard about before. “[I] had a set way in my head that volunteering was supposed to be…and it’s not like that.” Shea explained. She emphasized how there is a task for everyone on the jobsite and with a “Where can I help?” attitude from volunteers, there is always a “We will find something for you” response from staff which created an inviting and flexible atmosphere.

Shea explained that CQuence’s mission is similar to Habitat’s in how they both aim to better the community, one through healthcare and the other through affordable housing. Putting the mission of CQuence into action through volunteering with Habitat is something Shea believes benefits her company and coworkers. “A lot of us have been closer for it” she shares as they have come together to volunteer with their company’s mission in mind.

Volunteering as a company creates a different growth and team building opportunity that could not be found during the typical workday. As Shea set trusses with other members of CQuence she felt this difference stating, “there [is] no boundary like at work…[it] has been so amazing to actually just connect with people on a very personal level.”

We are thankful for teams of volunteers like those from CQuence Health for making an impact in our community. Not only do they build up our community, but they also build up one another.
