FAQ:  Donating a Vehicle

Why should I donate my car to Habitat Omaha?
What types of vehicles do you accept?

Don’t let the name fool you!

Habitat for Humanity accepts all kinds of vehicles, including cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, motorcycles, boats, planes, snowmobiles, farm equipment and more. If you have any questions, feel free to call our team at 877-277-4344.

Can I donate a vehicle that does not run?

Absolutely!

Your vehicle does not need to be running in order to donate it, but it does need to have all tires inflated.

What happens to donated cars?

About half of our cars are sold to licensed dealers at wholesale auctions and are reused for transportation. The other half are typically transported to auto salvage yards where all reusable car parts, batteries, tires and fluids are removed. Vehicles that can be recycled are crushed, shredded and recycled into steel.

Habitat receives funds for each donated vehicle, although a car sold at auction generally generates more revenue than one that is recycled. Every donation makes a difference and the families that partner with us are extremely grateful for your help.

What information do I need to have ready before donating?

Here are some basic things you should be prepared to know and provide for the donation:

  • Valid car title, free of liens
  • Year, make and model
  • VIN
  • Body type
  • Mileage
  • Condition
  • Date the vehicle was last driven

Complete your donation online by navigating to our donation wizard, or call our hotline: 1-877-277-4344. When your vehicle is accepted, schedule a day and time for us to pick it up.

How much of a tax write-off do I get for donating my car?

When your vehicle is sold, that will determine the value. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you may be eligible to deduct the full selling price. If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, you can deduct the “fair market value” of your vehicle, up to $500. We recommend that you talk to your tax advisor to determine your personal tax deduction situation.

“I chose Habitat for Humanity due to the wonderful work you do. There are so many places I could have donated but I understand what your organization does and wanted to be part of that, even if only in a small way.”
